At Fosse Primary School, we aim to provide an exciting maths curriculum that engages all children by using a variety of teaching and learning styles in our lessons. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in mathematics. We make sure that children have the opportunity to use a wide range of resources such as number lines, number squares, digit cards and small apparatus to support their work.

In all classes it is recognised that there are children of differing mathematical abilities, so we ensure that work is suitably differentiated where the challenge of tasks match the ability of the child. We achieve this in a number of ways:

  • Differentiated tasks, which involves setting different tasks for pupils of different abilities
  • Organising the children in to ability groups
  • Children supported by a classroom assistant
  • Varying expectations of the outcome of the task, which involves setting open-ended tasks and allowing pupil response at different levels.

From September 2014 the new curriculum was made mandatory (excluding Years 2 and 6 who will continue to follow the old primary framework until September 2015). To help embed the new curriculum Fosse purchased a math’s scheme, called Abacus. Abacus is founded on a unique and robust approach to creating inspired and confident young mathematicians, which ensures understanding and progression for every child.

Here is a website link to Abacus.  Your child should know their username and password, if not then please ask their class teacher.  The school code is 'cwph'.
